Although it seems unbelievable for a character whose dialogue boils down to “I Am Groot,” James Gunn has a method for the character.
Guardians of the Galaxy is wonderful. Few productions manage to put together a cast where each and every one of its members has a special place in the taste of the fans. And that’s the thing with the Guardians. And although any of them could have their own series, it fell to Baby Groot to be the initiator of the expansion of the franchise with I Am Groot, the series of animated shorts as a result of which we know James Gunn’s method of writing the dialogues of the character.

Wait. dialogues? Doesn’t it just say I Am Groot?
Well, recently, regarding the premiere of I Am Groot, its creators Kirsten Lepore and Brad Winderbaum spoke with Collider about the animations. In the talk, reporter Carly Lane questions them about James Gunn stating “that when he writes the dialogue for Groot in the Guardians movies, he writes the entire dialogue of what is said, and then translates it into the way it is. Groot communicates, which is just through a sentence.”
To the question, Kirsten Lepore replies: “Yes, it is the way James works. We have actual dialogue that’s in the script, which is kind of a subtitle for ‘I am Groot.’ I don’t know if anyone will see it. I don’t know if that will come to light, but I will also say that this is a board program, first and foremost, as many animation programs are. So we have a very loose outline and the boards come first, and the boards are the ones that start to dictate the dialogues and the vision of the whole thing, and the script comes later, and it’s done when we’ve already recorded and we have our drawings. animated. But the intention of the line is always there.”
