The renowned director of the movie ‘Titanic’ (1997), James Cameron, stated that since the beginning of this week he was aware that a catastrophe had occurred with ‘Titan’, the OceanGate company submersible that imploded at about 3,500 meters deep while on a tourist expedition to reach the remains of the ship that sank more than 100 years ago.
Camerón spoke with BBC Mundo and revealed that when he found out about the disappearance of “Titan” on Monday, He immediately called his expert contacts in the field and drew his own conclusions based on the experience he has obtained in 33 dives up to the ‘Titanic’.
“I immediately called some of my contacts in the deep-water submersible community. After an hour I had the following data. They were descending. They were at 3,500 meters and they were heading towards the bottom, at 3,800 meters.”he explained to the British chain.
The filmmaker acknowledged that when he learned how they had lost contact with the surface, he knew that the worst had happened to the occupants of the submersible.
“I felt in my bones what had happened. That the electronics of the submersible, its communication system and its tracking transponder failed at the same time, indicated that there was nothing to do anymore ”sentenced.
Furthermore, he added: “They lost communications and navigation, and I instantly said to myself: ‘You can’t lose communications and navigation at the same time without something extremely catastrophic or a very serious energy catastrophe happening.’ And the first thing that came to mind was that there had been an implosion.”
Was the search “a farce”?
In the opinion of those experienced in marine immersions, the information that appeared over the days was “a prolonged, nightmarish farce with people going around talking about banging noises and oxygen and all that stuff.”
As he explained to the BBC, he knew where ‘Titan’ had been: “I knew that the submarine was exactly below its last known depth and position. That’s exactly where they found it.”.
Camerón added that they finally found the remains when on Thursday because they submerged a remote-controlled underwater vehicle that ended up finding the remains. “in a matter of hours, probably in a matter of minutes.”
