the filmmaker James Cameron, director of the movie ‘Titanic’ (1997) and expert in deep-sea diving, said he was impressed by the “similarity” that exists between the catastrophe that occurred with the submersible ‘Titan’ and the ship itself that sank in 1912which they were trying to reach on a tourist expedition.
“I am struck by the similarity to the Titanic disaster itself, in which the captain was repeatedly warned about the presence of ice ahead of his ship, yet he sped towards the glacier field,” James told ABC News.
Cameron suggested that this was a “terrible irony” because In 2018 the company “OceanGate was warned” in a letter issued by members of the deep-water submersible community, to which the filmmaker belongs, about being “going down the path of catastrophe.”
“Now we have another shipwreck that is unfortunately based on the same principles of ignoring warnings”he affirmed to the British chain.
But that letter that the director of the movie ‘Titanic’ spoke of was not the only one that OceanGate Expedition received. The Marine Technology Society (MTS) also sent them a letter in March 2018 noting that “the current ‘experimental’ approach taken by OceanGate…could have negative (minor to catastrophic) results,” according to information obtained by the New York Times.
Cameron lost a friend in the ‘Titan’ implosion
One of the five occupants of the submersible that took tourists to a depth of 3,800 meters to see the remains of the ‘Titanic’, he was a friend of James Cameron, specifically the French pilot Paul-Henry Nargeolet.
“It’s really quite surreal and of course PH (Paul-Henry Nargeolet), the legendary French submersible scuba pilot, is a friend of mine. It is a very small community. I’ve known him for 25 years, so his tragic death is almost impossible for me to process.”he commented to the media.
The filmmaker knew about the implosion days ago
James commented that on Monday when he found out what had happened, he contacted experts in the field being able to access details about the last communication they had and the failures they presented, which made me immediately think that something very serious had happened to the lives of the occupants of ‘Titan’.
By his own admission, his experience led him to think of an implosion due to the pressure to which the submersible was subjected, he even commented that he knew they were going to find the parts of the ship right where they were found.
