Very soon we will be able to see the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from Amazon Prime and they do not want it to be compared to the movies.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Peter Jackson did almost a miracle, convinced Warner Bros to let him adapt the work of Tolkien, something that everyone thought was almost impossible to do. The result was so spectacular that it was not only a box office success, but the last film in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), won a bunch of Oscars. Now they will do a series and everyone expects it to be at the same level… Will they succeed?
In a recent interview, the showrunner of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of PowerPatrick McKay said that fans should not compare the series to the original trilogy:
“Anyone approaching The Lord of the Rings on screen would be wrong if they didn’t think about how wonderfully well Jackson got it right. But we are fans from afar, that’s all. The Rings of Power don’t try to compete with him. You can psych yourself up to keep up, but one of the mantras in this was to go back to the source material… What would Tolkien do?
More Harry Potter and less Peter Jackson.
“Some of these other competing properties, they play an octave really beautifully… But Tolkien was playing every note on the piano. He had that variety of shades. There is the fantasy, friendship and humor that Harry Potter is so loved for, but there is also sophistication, politics, history, mythology and depth. So for us, it was about digging deeper into who we are, rather than worrying about what other people do.” concluded patrick mckay.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut in Amazon Prime Video September 2. Let’s hope that its level is spectacular, because there are many fans of the saga that for now are not very convinced by the advances that have been shown.
