Mike Judge came from doing ‘Beavis and Butthead’, ‘King of the Hill’ and ‘Junk Job’. At the beginning of the 21st century he was the king of underground comedy. And yet, when it came time to promote his next movie, Fox didn’t even screen it for the critics. After all, who would want to see a film that charged against the modern world, brands and the American lifestyle that, above, it was called ‘Idiocracy’?
Houston, we have a problem
In fact, although it was already a low-budget film, ‘Idiocracy’ barely raised half a million dollars: It was a resounding failure that has become, since 2006, a true cult film… although in its day the public of the test passes did not fully understand it. Yes indeed, There was one thing in which they were absolutely right. Or they failed, depending on how you look at it.
‘Idiocracy’ takes place five hundred years in the future, and Judge needed people to carry absolutely stupid sneakers, a type of footwear that only had to be seen to laugh. The art designer found a factory that distributed a very ugly, strange, impossible shoe and, on top of that, made of plastic: with the small budget that it had, those shoes would have their moment of glory appearing in the film and would sink into mediocrity afterwards. Or so she thought.
From then until now, that ridiculous shoe has its own name: Crocs. In fact, last year Crocs were sold every four seconds, that is, 115 million. After all, who said that ‘Idiocracy’ wasn’t a correct version of the very, very near future? Ah, yes: if you have wanted to see (or see again) the film, bad luck. In Spain they have decided that it is not uploaded to any streaming service. Pure idiocracy.
