On August 2, as reported by SMASH, the Warner Bros. board of directors made official the decision to cancel the production and premiere of Batgirl, a film that was planned to be released on digital platforms, and which would have been connected to The Flash.
Six months after the controversial decision, and with his appointment at the head of DC Studios, Peter Safran spoke of the cancellation of Batgirl, something that the executive justified.
“I saw the movie… There are so many incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera in that movie, but that couldn’t be revealed. it happens sometimes“.
courageous decisions
Safran acknowledges that the decision of David Zazlav, CEO of Warner Bros., was highly commented at the time, but the producer acknowledges the courage to back down on this premiere.
“I think (David) Zaslav and the team made a bold and courageous decision to cancel it, because it would have hurt DC and the people involved. I spoke with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (the directors of Batgirl) ; we’d love to work with them… Christina Hodson wrote it, and we’re back in business with her”.
Safran teased that for upcoming DC Universe projects, like The Brave and the Bold, Batgirl could play a significant role in the Chapter 1 story.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but they made the right decision by shelving it… Batgirl is inevitably a character that we will include in our story.”.
