the character of Jack Sparrow has been associated for life with Johnny Depp. He may not have been the first actor chosen for the role and also that Disney was about to fire him, but currently it is even hard to imagine a future for the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise without him on board, although the sixth installment continues to take steps forward.
Jack Saprow’s blue nose
Now, though, let’s take a look back at Depp’s first meeting with the filmmaker. Gore Verbinsky so that the latter knew what was the approach that the actor wanted to give to the character of Jack Sparrow. It is in the audio commentary that both recorded together for the home format edition of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ (1) where they reveal the crazy first request that Depp had.
Apparently, Depp proposed that Sparrow should have lost his nose during a sword fight but then had it sewn back on. That would lead to had a blue nose because the blood circulation in the area would be very bad and that the fearsome pirate would then be more afraid of catching a cold or pepper than of death itself.
Even more surprising then was the reaction of both. On the one hand, Depp he was aware of the nonsense he was saying and that they could not go ahead with that ideaSomething that relieved Verbinski, who during the exhibition of the protagonist of ‘Transcendent’ had assumed that he had no choice but to accept it and was already trying to find a way to convince Disney.
Luckily, the thing did not go beyond that and Depp ended up composing a memorable character for which He was even nominated for an Oscar for best actor.
(1) Beware, in Spain that audio commentary is only included in the DVD edition, since Disney did not consider it appropriate that it also be on the blu-ray.
