Ryan Murphythe famous television series producer, announced that the actor Evan Peters had to delve into the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for four monthsin order to give a convincing interpretation in the series of Netflix Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
When interviewed last weekend along with some actors from the series, Murphy commented that Peters – known for walking with a straight posture – had to wear weights around his arms and in his shoes for 16 weeks to achieve Dahmer’s characteristic curvaturein addition to working on your way of speaking slowly, working with a coach of dialogues.
“We tried to interpret the story but also that we definitely had something to say. He had something as an artist. I felt this was the biggest thing I had ever worked on. That explored the idea of white privilege. I mean, this guy basically got busted 10 times and ran away, and I wanted to tell that story. I wanted to tell a story about homophobia. He wanted to tell a story about surveillance. I wanted to tell a story about racism, systemic racism. We were very conscious of talking about all those things over and over again in the writers’ room and also with the actors,” said Ryan, who always trusted the 35-year-old actor known for his role as “Quicksilver” in films of Marvel and the series “American Horror Story”.
As for Evan, he revealed that playing the serial killer – convicted of killing 17 people between 1978 and 1991 – was an intense and complicated process: “Honestly, he was very scared by all the things he did. Diving in and trying to commit to that was absolutely one of the hardest things. I’ve had to do in my life, because I wanted it to be very authentic… It was just having that end goal in sight, knowing when we were going to finish and finally being able to breathe and let it go and say ‘OK, now it’s time to bring the joy and lightness and watch comedies and romances and go back to St. Louis and see my family and friends and yes watch the comedy tape “Step Brothers”‘”.
