In 1999, director Kevin Smith surprised critics and audiences with a controversial comedy film titled “Dogma”which featured an all-star cast made up of Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman Y Alanis Morrisette. Now, more than 20 years later, he says that the producer of that tape, Harvey Weinsteinkeeps her as a “hostage”.
In statements to TheWrapSmith (director of independent comedies such as “Clerks” Y “Chasing Amy”) commented that a few years ago, with the restructuring of The Weinstein Company “Dogma” was forgotten, but by then it was already a cult film and its DVD distribution rights had expired (the film is not available on streaming). “Honestly, I don’t think (Weinstein) knew that he still owned that movie, or that it could no longer be distributed publicly,” he said.
Harvey Weinstein proposed to Kevin to make a television series or a sequel to “Dogma”, but shortly after the executive was accused of sexual abuse and rape (he was later sentenced to 23 years in prison). From there the director no longer had contact with Weinstein, but he found out that he was trying to sell the distribution rights of the film for $ 5 million dollars. “I love that film, but I don’t have that amount and it’s not what the market wants. We live in an era of streamingSmith commented.
So far, it is not known if “Dogma” (a film in which Affleck and Damon played two angels) will be seen by new generations, and not even the kevin smith anticipates what might happen with a possible distribution. “The right thing to do would have been to sell it back to me. It’s my movie and he’s holding her hostage. The owner of my tape about angels is the devil himself.”
