tech news desk, iPhone maker Apple and Alphabet, which runs internet search engine Google, have warned Amazon about child pornography being available on the popular Kindle app for reading books. These companies have asked Amazon to strengthen its content moderation. Reuters sent questions about users’ ability to access and view pornographic content through the Kindle app to spokespeople for all three companies. These companies say their apprehensions were related to policy violations. Although these companies have not given much information about the violation of their rules and the warning given to Amazon. Reuters was told about the problem by two families. These families said their children had downloaded pornographic material through Amazon’s unlimited e-book subscription service. These families refused to reveal their identities.
In this regard, Amazon said in a statement to Reuters, “We are committed to providing a safe shopping and reading experience for our customers and their families and we take matters like this very seriously. Will check the information.” We are reviewing and will take action based on our findings.” Referring to Amazon, Apple said, “We have notified the developers of these concerns and are working with them to ensure that that their apps follow our guidelines.”
Google said in a statement, “Google Play doesn’t allow apps that contain or promote sexually explicit material. We’re in contact with the developer about this issue.” This type of warning is rarely seen among tech companies. Apart from competing with each other, these companies also depend on each other for many services. Amazon and Kindle apps are among the most downloaded apps on Google and Apple’s app stores. Global e-book distributor Amazon has a large share of this market. eBooks can be read on Kindle devices as well as on the Kindle mobile app.
