In his social networks, James Gunn spoke of the “inspiration” that Alan Moore and Watchmen gave the filmmaker at times when nothing goes as expected
Behind every success there are good decisions, but also moments of frustration, and in the making of The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series, James Gunn knows the process behind the realization of these proposals, where one of his inspirations was Alan Moore, when creating Watchmen.

In every creative process there are times when what was planned simply does not turn out as one would have wished, something James Gunn recalled when writer Kurt Busiek shared some information about the creation of Watchmen, Alan Moore’s masterpiece at DC Comics.
One of the things I like about comics history is how much of the great moments happened by mistake, or at least not quite on purpose.
WATCHMEN became WATCHMEN when a Charlton pitch was too weird for the Charlton characters, so let’s make it a new thing, guys.

“One of the things I like about comic book history is how many big moments happened by mistake, or at least not entirely on purpose… WATCHMEN became WATCHMEN when a Charlton pitch was too weird for the characters in Charlton, so let’s do something new fellas”.
The crimebusters to the rescue
James Gunn took up this message and revealed that when things don’t go his way, he thinks back to the time Alan Moore was denied the use of Charlton Comics characters, which gave rise to Watchmen.
When I get upset about something going wrong for me creatively, I often think of how bummed Alan Moore probably was being told he couldn’t use the Charlton characters, who he planned to use for Watchmen, and then went on to create the greatest superhero comic series ever. https://t.co/rH28yZQ8N6

In 1985 Alan Moore planned to write a story featuring characters from Charlton comics, but at the request of former publisher Dick Giordano, Moore created new characters based on Blue Beetle (Night Owl/Daniel Dreiberg), Peter Cannon Thunderbolt (Ozymandias/Adrian Veidt), Captain Atom (Dr. Manhattan / Dr. Jonathan Osterman), Peacemaker (Comedian/Edward Blake), Night Shade (Silk Specter II/ Laurie Juspeczyk), and The Question (Rorschach/Walter Kovak).
Watchmen became a publishing success for DC Comics and the graphic novel became one of the 100 best novels of the 20th century.
