Ridley Scott made it clear before the premiere of ‘Alien: Covenant’ that his plan was to continue the saga with more films. He first spoke of up to four more deliveries to clarify shortly after that he might only do one or two more. The only thing that is completely certain is that ‘Alien: Covenant’ was not the end of the road, but It’s been five years since its premiere and we’re still waiting for another movie in the saga.
the first doubts
The first reason for so much delay was the disappointing commercial performance of ‘Alien: Covenant’. With worldwide revenues of 240 million dollars, it cannot be said that it was a failure, but it is that ‘Prometheus’ had amassed more than 400 at the time. It was clear that the public had lost interest in the saga.
Scott’s plan was for John Logan to write the script and focus on a group of Engineers who managed to escape from their planet after the devastation caused by David, counting again on Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and Danny McBrideand that would serve to close the circle with ‘Alien, the eighth passenger’, one of the best science fiction movies in history.
Shortly after that, news broke that the film, tentatively titled ‘Alien: Covenant 2,’ had been pushed back and At no time did it have a confirmed release date.
It is true that Scott was giving new details such as that the film was going to prioritize androids and artificial intelligence over xenomorphs or that the story would take place in LV-426, a place described in ‘Alien, the eighth passenger’ as hostile and uninhabitable (and within the chronology of the saga it is considered one of the first planets infested by xenomorphs). In this regard, it transpired that David would persecute the surviving Engineers of his extermination there and that his new title was ‘Alien Awakening’.
While we received interesting plot promises but that did not materialize at all, Disney confirmed the purchase of Fox, which led to many projects were left aside or had to be turned around.
Some time later it was commented again that Scott was preparing a prequel, but the project seemed to be forgotten again when at the end of 2020 the launch of an ‘Alien’ series with Noah Hawley at the helm in which Scott was considered to direct an episode. For now, it is still up in the air that he is going to do it -although, due to certain of his statements, it seems unlikely that it will happen-, since its filming, scheduled for early 2022, has been delayed until 2023.
For its part, from the sequel to ‘Alien: Covenant’ the last thing that was known was that in the summer of 2021 it was confirmed that it had been delayed again, and there are increasing signs that it will most likely never be done. For now, this same 2022 a new film in the saga was announced totally independent of the rest of the rest that has the approval of Scott himself.
In addition, the director of ‘The Last Duel’ is very busy with other projects. He recently finished filming his movie about Napoleon Bonaparte starring joaquin phoenix and was supposed to end up with Gladiator 2. And let’s not forget that Scott turns 85 this coming November 30…
Therefore, Chances are we’ll never see that sequel to ‘Alien: Covenant’or at least not with Scott taking care of her.
