One of the unknowns that revolve around the adaptation of The Sandman for digital platforms is the stories that the series will take into account for the first season.
As SMASH teased, the first arc to adapt the television series will be Preludes and Nocturnes, which was originally published in 1988, and comprises the first eight issues of the Neil Gaiman and Sam Kieth series.
Gaiman clarified that compared to the comic, in the plot for the television series Morpheus will be trapped in 1916 by Burgess wizards, but his release will take place in the present and not in 1988, when the comic came out.
“In The Sandman #1, there is a sleeping sickness that occurs because Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, is captured in 1916 and in 1988 he escapes… (For the series) Instead of being held captive for about 80 years, he will be held captive for about 110 years and that will change things”. Neil Gaiman recalled.
Although the trailer for The Sandman showed us iconic moments from Preludes or Dreams, such as the liberation of Morpheus, or the appearance of Death, there will also be characters that will debut in the Doll’s House arc, such as Rose Walker and Merv Pumpkin Head, whose voice will be that of Mark Hamill.
Welcome to the kingdom of dreams and nightmares
The Sandman follows in the footsteps of Morpheus, the God of sleep, and his impact on the world, as he tries to right the cosmic and human mistakes he made during his existence.
The result is a rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend seamlessly intertwine.
The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain.
Also starring are Jenna Coleman as Joanna Constantine, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, and Mason Alexander Park as Desire.
Allan Heinberg will be the screenwriter of the series, where Neil Gaiman will serve as producer, alongside David S. Goyer
The Sandman will be released on August 5, 2022 through the most famous digital entertainment platform.
