The amount of the shopping basket has risen 13% since 2021 due to inflation. As indicated by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), “The average difference between the most expensive and the cheapest supermarket in a city is 994 euros, almost a fifth of the annual family spending on shopping”.
That is why finding a supermarket where you can save is so interesting. And this is precisely what the latest annual study by the OCU has done. In it, the organization analyzes prices of 1,180 supermarkets in 65 Spanish cities facilitating the choice to seek savings and that we only have to worry about keeping order in the fridge and organizing the pantry.
The OCU ranking of cheapest supermarkets
The cheapest supermarket chains are Tifer and Dani, both regional. They are followed by Family Cash, Alcampo and Supeco. The masks? Sánchez Romero, Ulabox, Novavenda and Amazon. By average price level, the best are Superdino, E. Lecllerc, Hiperber, Carrefour Market and Mas.
Buo, the supermarket app that promises savings of 30% on the purchase thanks to the fact that it is done in a group and that the intermediaries disappear, does not appear in the study.
What is striking (and sad) about the study is that for the first time, all supermarket chains without exception raise prices. Among the large chains, the establishments of the Día group and Mercadona are the ones that have done it the most.
Opting for one of the cheapest chain means, at the end of the year, a saving that can exceed 1,000 euros. However, there are large differences between cities. Vigo and Ciudad Real are the cheapest cities in Spain. It is followed by Jerez, Almería, Granada, Huelva, Puertollano and Palencia. Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Gerona, Madrid and Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes are the most expensive cities. Nevertheless, maximum savings are achieved in Madrid (3,529 euros), followed by the Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes area with 2,977 euros. On the other hand, the cities where it is most difficult to save are Cuenca (485 euros), Segovia (520 euros) and Pontevedra (526 euros).
Among the products analyzed, highlights the rise in the price of sunflower oil with a rise of 118%, followed by muffins and margarine (75%) and bananas, pasta, olive oil and flour with increases of 50% or more. There has also been an upward trend especially in dairy and poultry.
There is only a small group of 12 products that belong to the hygiene category (shampoo -5%), and fruits (Avocado -10%, kiwi -6%) that have anecdotal declines.
