Although the road to the premiere of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ was not free of doomsayers who prophesied a commercial debacle that would bury James Cameron’s aspirations to continue with his beloved saga, many of us sensed since the announcement of the project that the new adventure set in Pandora was destined to revolutionize the box office Christmas of this 2022; and so it has been.
Box office sense
After closing its opening with an absolutely negligible gross of 434.5 million dollars worldwide, ‘Avatar 2′ has closed the Christmas weekend with another 454.8 million in his pocket that would make a total of 889.3 million dollars. This figure, currently estimated and which could exceed 900 million after adding Monday’s data, places the space epic at the fifth place of the annual box officesurpassing ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ by about 90 million.
In addition, the sequel to the 2009 hit already has ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’ in its sights —which ranks fourth with 939 million— and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” —third positioned with 955 millions of dollars, to which could dethrone before the end of the film course. For its part, ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and especially ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ look in the rear-view mirror with 1,000 million and 1,488 million dollars respectively.
This fifth place comes after ‘The Sense of Water’ once again crowned the American box office in its second weekend, defying the storm that has hit the country with a provisional amount of 64 million dollars, which represents a 52% dropbut which has eclipsed the premieres of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ and ‘Babylon’, which have debuted with 12.4 million, 4.7 million and a disastrous 3, 6 million dollars.
In Spain, in the absence of specific figures, we know that the return of ‘Puss in Boots’ has closed its launch with 1.1 million euros that place it in second position behind ‘Avatar: The sense of water’, which has once again occupied number one after its astronomical start valued at 7.3 million; the best for our rooms since 2019.
