The award seasons of recent years, in addition to the strictly film and television, have been marked by the progressive decline of the Golden Globes; some awards that, after years of controversies related to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, they ended up hitting bottom in a 2021 for oblivion.
The lack of diversity in the HFPA and the scandals surrounding some of its members led to the cancellation of the broadcast of the 2022 gala, to some stars like Tom Cruise deciding to return their statuettes as a protest gesture and to a 2023 ceremony with a historical audience minimum; but today, as Variety reports, a new future has opened up for the Golden Globes.
Blur… and new account?
Dick Clark Productions and a company called Eldrige have acquired all rights, property and assets of the Golden Globes which, until now, belonged to the Foreign Press Association, for an undetermined amount. In this way, the new organization will move away from the previous non-profit model to seek to open the awards to “pursue far more business opportunities than were possible under the HFPA regime”.
This does not mean that the “solidarity” aspect of the Globes is completely lost. As reported, DCP and Eldrige use HFPA assets and money to create the Golden Globe Foundationwhich will continue to be focused on the charitable donations that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made when they chaired the brand.
At this point, the big question is: With foreign critics out of the equation, Who will vote to select the winners each year? According to The LA Times, Helen Hoehne, president of the HFPA, has explained in a statement, the plan is “turn the 95 non-profit members into employees of a for-profit company”.
What does this mean? hoehne explains it… more or less:
“The organizing members of a non-profit entity without responsibility and with a bad organization are relocated to another entity in which there is responsibility on the part of the employees.”
This implies that Golden Globe winners will be chosen by HFPA members who choose to remain with the organization and not abandon ship with a compensation of 225,000 dollars under his arm – plus the 200 international journalists who have joined the group in recent years. For the moment, it remains to be seen how many critics will choose to accept these generous conditions, but everything seems to indicate that things will not change much in this regard.
Today’s date it is unknown what will happen with the celebration and broadcast of the 2024 awards ceremonysince NBC only renewed the contract for the retransmission for one year after the debacle of 2022.
