Relive how this particular love story between Daredevil and Elektra has been written, two people whose destiny dictates that they will stay together
In 1981’s Daredevil (1964) #168, Elektra Natchios burst into the life of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, and nothing has been the same since.
Don’t Miss: The Shine of Daredevil and Elektra’s Romance in Hell’s Kitchen
Writer and artist Frank Miller quickly established that Matt and Elektra had a relationship in their college years before battling on the streets of New York against emerging underground evils.
Through tragedy, trials, tribulations, and even death, Matt Murdock and Elektra found their way back to each other in the pages of Daredevil (2019). And for the first time in years, they were truly a couple.
Now, in Daredevil (2022) #4, writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Rafael De Latorre have delivered another major milestone in the lives of Matt and Elektra.
This issue represents a major shift in their relationship, as the two Daredevils prepare for the final war against the hidden ninja organization called The Hand.
Take a look at the key moments leading up to this one with our full relationship rundown, from Matt and Elektra’s first meeting to their two stints as Daredevil.
Who’s that Girl?
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (1993) #2 gave us a detailed account of the first time Matt became aware of Elektra. Even before he knew her name, Matt embarked on a wild chase to catch up with her. Elektra’s presence intoxicated Matt, and she clearly wanted to draw him in by encouraging him to let go of whatever was holding him back.
However, Daredevil: Fearless Woman (2022) #1 put a darker spin on this romance when it was revealed that Elektra knew about Matt long before she met him during those wild college days. And it was her original intention to seduce him into joining The Hand for a life of shared servitude.
Whirlwind Romantic
Who has time for a first kiss? Matt and Elektra skipped several steps in their blossoming relationship in Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (1993) #3.
This was a view of his college years that had only been glimpsed previously. But he overlooked the incident that ultimately set Matt and Elektra on very different paths.
unavoidable tragedy
Elektra’s first appearance in Daredevil (1964) #168 revealed that she and Matt were dating when her father, Greek ambassador Hugo Natchios, was taken hostage along with Elektra by terrorists. Although not yet Daredevil, Matt took it upon himself to save Elektra and her father.
It was only partially successful, as Hugo was accidentally killed by police trying to shoot the terrorists.
In her grief, Elektra left Matt behind and devoted herself to her studies to become a great warrior. She ultimately chose the path of The Hand before returning to New York as one of the world’s deadliest assassins.
Elektra’s death
Daredevil (1964) #181 is the now classic battle of all time when elektra and the maniacal bullseye went toe to toe. And only one walked away. For the first time, Elektra faced an enemy she could not defeat.
And it ultimately cost Elektra her life when Bullseye impaled her on his own sai. As she bled out, Elektra managed to crawl to Matt’s door and reconcile with him before dying in her arms.
It was a devastating and defining moment in Matt’s life. But in the Marvel Universe, death is rarely the end.
Resurrection
The Hand wanted to resurrect Elektra so that she could once again serve them as an immoral and immortal totem. Matt couldn’t let that happen, which led to a confrontation in Daredevil (1964) #190.
But when confronted with Elektra’s body, Matt couldn’t pass up the chance to try and resurrect her himself. Although Matt believed that she had failed, Elektra came back to life.
And, for a time, he was cleansed of the darkness that had haunted his ledger for years. Love truly had conquered all.
when the darkness calls
As a consequence of Elektra’s redemption and resurrection, her darkness manifested as Erynys, and she was essentially Elektra’s spiritual evil twin. For the first time in years, Elektra was reunited with Matt to face Erynys and defeat the darkness once and for all.
But in Daredevil (1964) #325, Elektra paid a heavy price for her victory. Once Erynys died, the darkness within her returned to Elektra and she was forced to face her true nature once again.
a new daredevil
After a long period of estrangement, Elektra re-entered Matt’s life in Daredevil (2019) #10 with an offer to help him regain his upper hand. Of course, she also had an ulterior motive.
Elektra had already decided to reform The Fist to take down The Hand, but she needed Matt’s trust to do so. And because Matt had no faith in her, Elektra decided to prove her worth by becoming the new Daredevil in Daredevil (2019) #25.
As Matt languished in prison, Elektra took responsibility and fought for his rules. She even refrained from killing, because it wasn’t what Matt would have wanted.
Although Matt couldn’t believe Elektra’s decision, her actions convinced him and finally revived the love that had abandoned their lives years before.
marriage under fire
Having accepted Elektra’s proposal to lead The Fist together and defeat The Hand, Matt and his longtime love underwent a nerve-racking trial by fire in Daredevil (2022) #4.
In order to become the King and Queen of The Fist, Matt and Elektra had to fight a group of undead warriors from The Hand and make it out alive.
After a grueling battle, neither Matt nor Elektra were able to stand up, but Stick declared them husband and wife, technically making this the second time Matt has married.
Together, they can tackle almost anything. But Matt may not realize that one of The Fist’s key prophecies is that the King or Queen must die to fulfill their mission.
