Do you want movie premieres? Well, take two cups! Without realizing the passage of time, it’s time to say goodbye to the month of September, and to make the feeling that the end of 2022 is just around the corner more bearable, Spanish cinemas entertain us not with one, but with fourteen —which is said soon— film premieres. Productions for all tastes that we are going to review below.
The premieres of September 30, 2022
‘Smile’ (2022)
- The film was originally intended for a streaming premiere on Paramount+, but public reactions during test screenings were so positive that the company decided to make the leap to the big screen.
- The film is directed by newcomer Parker Finn, who has directed the shorts ‘Laura Hasn’t Slept’ and ‘The Hidebehind’.
- Many are defining it as a spiritual successor to ‘The Ring’ with murderous curses involved, although everything indicates that it is much more than that.
- To promote it, the production company decided to place actors in different public spaces smiling just like the characters in the film, even appearing in live broadcasts.
Criticism in Espinof: Finally a scary movie in 2022: ‘Smile’ is a masterful carousel of scares, impact and horror in its purest form that does not seek to be anything else
‘The wild girl’ (‘Where the Crawdads Sing’, 2022)
- It is based on the novel by Delia Owens, and hybridizes genres such as romantic drama with thriller, all in a southern key.
- It is directed by Olivia Newman, responsible for ‘First Match’ and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Taylor John Smith.
- The movie plays the song Calorina, written and performed by Taylor Swift.
- Resse Witherspoon is in charge of production, and the first trailer was released on her birthday — March 22.
‘Argentina, 1985’ (2022)
- The film comes to our theaters after winning the FIPRESCI award at the Venice Festival and after winning the Audience Award at the San Sebastian Festival.
- It has a prestigious cast led by Ricardo Darín, along with names such as Peter Lanzani, Alejandra Flechner or Carlos Portaluppi.
- It is directed by Santiago Mitre, responsible for titles such as ‘La cordillera’ or ‘Pequeña flor’
- The story takes us to Argentina in 1985 to immerse ourselves in a trial against the country’s military dictatorship.
Criticism in Espinof: San Sebastian Festival 2022 | ‘Argentina, 1985’ finds the perfect midpoint between judicial drama and comedy with an excellent Ricardo Darín
