This 2023 we will have ‘Drag Race Spain’ twice (with season 3 and ‘All Stars’). To make the wait somewhat shorter, Atresplayer Premium decided to bet on ‘Queens to the rescue’a more intimate and emotional format than brings us closer to the deep Spain by the hand of our favorite queens.
LGBT+ stories
‘Drag Race Spain’ is a good showcase of the many facets that drag has: it’s fun, it’s creativity, it’s vindication… As a playful tone usually predominates in the programme, ‘Reinas al rescate’ arrives to give greater prominence to the emotional.
As happened with Shangela, Eureka and Bob The Drag Queen in ‘We’re here’, this time there are four queens of ‘Drag Race Spain’ who throw the blanket over their heads and They accompany us through rural Spain to learn about different LGTB+ stories.
Supreme de Luxe, Sharonne, Pupi Poisson and Estrella Xtravaganza They are in charge of going “to the rescue” through various Spanish towns throughout the six episodes: Roda de Barà (Tarragona), Benilloba (Alicante), Linares (Jaén), Cálig (Castellón), Landete (Cuenca) and Campaspero ( Castile and Leon).
A tour that brings us closer to some protagonists with different LTGB+ identities and their stories: what their lives are like in a rural environment, what relationship they have with their parents, what paths they have taken to get there… and what our queens can do to help them.
Each episode lasts approximately one hour and is structured in a similar way: the queens receive the “sore call” from the protagonist of the chapter, they arrive in their town and get to know the person and those around them better, to conclude by making star in your own drag show.
Without a doubt, a reality show where it comes out to reduce the most human side of drag and its vindictive capacity. The program manages to balance a very emotional tone, where there is space for sensitive topics without overexploiting the drama or losing sight of good humor.
is the program perfect to make visible other realities and also to bring those people who are not familiar with all the nuances of the wide LGBT+ range closer.
The realization of the reality show is also raised in a different way from ‘Drag Race’, with frames that emphasize the emotional approach to the characters of each episode (although personally the montage grates on me sometimes, at moments like when they cut a shot in the middle of a conversation to put an aerial panorama of the town, for example).
‘Queens to the rescue’ It is the most emotional reality of last year: a walk through rural Spain by the hand of these four fantastic queens, who bring us closer to different LGBT+ stories. We don’t know if there will be season 2 but, if you haven’t seen this first one yet, prepare the box of tissues.
