One of Marvel’s most ambitious films so far has been ‘Eternals’, since it is one of the few studio titles in which the hand of its director is highly noticeable. Like it more or less, it is evident that behind her there is someone with their own voice as Chloe Zhaowho has now thrown a jug of cold water on those who were looking forward to its sequel.
And it is that at the time a continuation was quickly launched, something logical if we remember what happened in its two post-credit scenes, but ‘Eternals 2’ seems to have been completely forgotten within Marvel. This is what Zhao recently had to say about her involvement in this sequel:
No comment. When you’re at Marvel and dealing with such a large audience, I really appreciate and respect that each of us is so unique. It’s exciting that we are all so different, and that we all change and grow every day. But with a global audience, it’s almost impossible to make everyone happy, and to do that is to say that everyone is equal. So I think there are inevitably going to be differences of opinion, and you just have to be true to the type of film you want to make, who you are and the people you collaborate with. That’s all you can do and have fun. Everything else is out of your control.
Let’s keep in mind that ‘Eternals’ it was a disappointment on all levels. Economically, it raised 402 million dollars when its cost was 200 million, to which must be added the additional investment in marketing. And artistically, ‘Eternals’ became Marvel’s worst-reviewed film at the time, a title it still holds, although it currently shares it with the recently released ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’.
It should not be forgotten either that Marvel did not mention the sequel for Phase 5 and it does not seem very likely that it is one of the titles that remain to be clarified from Phase 6. Obviously, that cold reception of the first installment does not help to make ‘Eternals 2’ a priority for the study. And zero surprises if it ends up choosing to almost pretend it didn’t exist beyond the occasional appearance of some of its characters in other studio titles.
In Espinof: ‘Eternals’ would be better with these four deleted scenes: Marvel made a mistake by removing them from the film that can already be seen for free on Disney+
