That the province of Almería has wonderful beaches like those of Cabo de Gata is something that we all know, however, the capital is also one of those cities that is worth visiting. It is one of those places that we can see in a weekend because it is not very big and gives us many possibilities, as well as being a starting point for many other towns in the province and surroundings.
Thus, let’s see some of its essentials that could not be missing on a visit to the city of Almería where, it is clear, many more will be missing.
the citadel
We begin with the jewel in the crown of the Andalusian capital: The Alcazaba, castle and walls of Cerro de San Cristóbal which is an impressive monumental complex and one of the most important in our geography that has allowed us to discover the evolution of civil and military architecture during the Arab domination in Al-Andalus. It is super well preserved and, without a doubt, it is an appointment that we cannot miss.
Cathedral
If we take a walk through the center of Amlería, surely one of the first monuments that you come across is the Cathedral of the Incarnation whose building has a very curious fortress structure (and unique in its kind, at least in these parts) and a transitional architecture between the late Gothic and the Renaissance. It is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Constitution Square
Also known as Plaza Vieja where, in addition to a good number of public buildings, we have this space that is super nice where the sports halls are intermingled with that space in the center that is very beautiful and, yes, it is surrounded by cafeterias and places to have a snack .
Shelters from the Civil War
Another great attraction to visit in the city of Almería is the network of shelters and tunnels from the Civil War. Specifically, these are concrete air-raid shelters that we can get to know with guided tours that are worthwhile.
Central Market
Fifthly, although it would not be the last because we have many more, we have to talk about this market that was the first food market and the largest for a long time in the city of Almería that we find near the Puerta de Purchena, popularly considered as geographical center of the city, more specifically in the Rambla Obispo Orberá.
