In the ‘One Piece’ anime we are still in the Wano Country Arc, but in the manga Eiichiro Oda He closed the saga last year with a heart-stopping final battle. Wano left us a good handful of surprises and revelations… but fans of Zoro that they hoped that more would be said about their past and that some of the theories that had been around the internet for years would be confirmed, because they were left with the desire.
It is seen that After the closure of the saga, the questions have not stopped coming, and in the end Oda has ended up talking more about Zoro’s family, but not as many would have liked.
So much asking is worth something
In the compiled volumes of the manga, Oda has a small section known as “SBS” in which he answers questions from fans and sometimes gives little details of trivia of all kinds. Since we didn’t find out much about Zoro in Wano, in the end has decided to confirm his family tree in SBS volume 105.

The first thing that ends up being confirmed is something that many fans suspected: that indeed part of Zoro’s family comes from Wano. In the family tree that Oda shared, it is confirmed that 55 years earlier, a group left Wano and ended up settling on an island in the East Blue after defeating bandits who were attacking a village.
Ten of the twenty-five travelers who left Wano and founded the town of Wano stayed there. Shimotsuki. Does this name ring a bell? Good, because Shimotsuki Kouzaburou had a son named Shimotsuki Koushiro, who eventually became the father of Kuina and in Zoro’s teacher.
And what about Zoro? Well, his grandmother Shitmosuki Furiko was also in this group that left Wano and settled in East Blue. She married a swordsman named Roronoa Pinzoro and they had a son, Arashi. Arashi later married Tera, the daughter of a bandit, and from this union came Zoro.
Unfortunately, it appears that Arashi died fighting pirates and Tera from an unspecified illness, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing much of them in the series. Aside from explaining a bit better where Zoro’s family comes from, it also confirms that he and Kuina were family.
These theories had been around for a while, and with the Oda family tree he has also finished confirming that indeed Shimotsuki Ushimaru is Zoro’s great uncle., as he was Furiko’s brother. Now the ultimate bombshell is that both are descended from Shimotsuki Ryuma, the legendary samurai Zoro met on Thriller Bark.
According to Oda, Zoro is unaware of the latter and the truth is that we don’t know to what extent Zoro knows about his family tree and his connection to Wano, because it’s not like he’s telling his life openly to everyone.
Although this SBS has served to confirm many theories, there are many fans who have not been well that Oda has revealed all this a little underhanded behind the scenes instead of spending some time on it during the Wano Arc. Although well, since there is still a lot of manga ahead, we may have a flashback or a comment from Zoro on the subject.
