“This decision was taken because it was not possible to organize the event in complete safety for our fans, our teams and our staff. It is a responsible decision due to the situation in the cities and towns of the region. It would not be fair to increase the pressure on local authorities and intervention services in a difficult period,” said the F1 promoter.
However, this news caused a surprise for fans of motorsports, as well as the Formula 1 drivers themselves, who spoke about it on the internet.
The Mexican Sergio “Checo” Pérez from Red Bull Racing, shared his prayers for the people of that region on his social networks.
“All my thoughts and prayers with the people in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. We won’t be racing there this weekend, but I hope we can go back soon. Please stay safe!”, published the pilot from Guadalajara.
His Dutch teammate Max Verstappen also retweeted a statement about it. “Max Verstappen and Verstappen.com support the decisions made by F1 and the local authorities to cancel the Grand Prix.”
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by the heavy rains and floods in the metropolitan region of Emilia Romagna. We wish them all the strength to guarantee their safety during this period, ”he notes.
For his part, Lewis Hamilton also shared a message. “Hopeing that everyone in Emilia Romagna can stay safe and take care of themselves at this time. My thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy and the incredible emergency services on the ground.”
“I know we all understand that safety comes first. I can’t wait to see you all at the next race”, added the British driver.
Scuderia Ferrari, as well as Red Bull Racing, also ruled on Formula 1’s decision on the Emilia-Romagna GP.
“Although it is our home race and therefore a very important race for us, the priority at this time must be the health of those who live and work in the region,” said the Italian team Ferrari.
“The safety of everyone involved and in the region is paramount. Our thoughts are with those affected by the ongoing flooding in Emilia-Romagna and with the emergency teams serving the region at this difficult time,” RedBull Racing said.
Following the heavy rain that has been affecting northern Italy, we support the decision taken by @F1 to not proceed with the Grand Prix in Imola this weekend. Safety to all those involved and in the region is paramount and has to take priority.
