Bono and The Edge, members of U2, offered a surprise concert in the facilities of the kyiv metro, in Ukraine. The president of the aforementioned country, Volodímir Zelenski, contacted the musicians with the intention of providing a moment of calm to soldiers and civilians.
The musicians performed the songs With or Without You Y Angel of Harlem, Plus a version of stand by me by Ben E. King. The moment was captured by various television networks that cataloged the mini-concert as a historical event and full of emotions.
After the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out and affected thousands of civilians, the underground train station in kyiv, Ukraine, has been used as a bomb shelter. However, on May 8, the facilities became the stage for Bono and The Edge, members of U2, who showed their support for Ukraine with a mini-concert at the aforementioned facilities.
The participation of the musicians was made possible by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Fill the silence with your music! Fill it out today to tell our story. Tell the truth about this war on social networks, on television. Support us in any way you can. Anyone, but not silence. And then peace will come. Our musicians wear bulletproof vests instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded in hospitals. Even to those who cannot hear them. But the music will break through anyway.
– Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine
For a few minutes, Zelenski, Bono and The Edge managed to get the civilians and soldiers to change the thunderous sound of the bombs for sweet melodies that they sang in unison.
After the mini-concert, Bono and The Edge visited Bucha, a town on the outskirts of kyiv where hundreds of bodies were found after Russian troops withdrew last month. As they passed, the musicians offered a touch of hope and together with their team they evaluated the situation to provide more help to those who need it.
