This alliance between the famous brand of the Volkswagen group and the Swiss team had been expected since the end of August, with the announcement of the end of the collaboration between Sauber and Alfa Romeo at the end of 2023.
Audi also plans to acquire stakes in the Sauber group for greater involvement in the Swiss team, which has been present in the F1 World Championship for 30 years.
The hybrid engine of the future single-seaters will be manufactured in the technical center of Audi Sport in Neubourg-sur-le-Danube, north of Munich, while Sauber will develop the F1 at its headquarters in Hinwil (Switzerland).
Sauber will remain on the grid in 2024 and 2025 with its current Ferrari engine.
“This is super news,” Stefano Domenicali, president of Formula 1, celebrated in a statement. “The combination of these two names is very encouraging for our sport, it shows the growing success of F1 and the strength of our decisions to continue making it grow, betting on carbon neutrality by 2023,” he said.
