Emma Watson established herself as one of the most sought after and beloved actresses in the industry, after masterfully interpreting Hermione Granger in Harry Potter; However, it’s been more than 5 years since she has stayed away from the sets, why did she quit acting, will it be the end of her acting career?
The sad reason why Emma Watson began to hate acting
It was in 2019 when Emma participated in a film for the last time, the film in question was the new adaptation of ‘Little Women’, a film that would make the actress begin to wonder about her future in the industry.
During an interview for The Financial Times, Emma revealed that she felt very uncomfortable while working on the set of ‘Little Women’, under the direction of Greta Gerwig, the person in charge of the new ‘Barbie’ movie.
“I wasn’t very happy, if I’m honest. I think I felt a bit caged in,” Emma stated.
And she explained why she felt so uncomfortable being part of a project where she didn’t have much control over her own thoughts.
“What I found really difficult was that I had to go out and sell something that I didn’t really have a lot of control over.
To put myself in front of a film and all the journalists could say: ‘How does this align with your point of view (in relation to your facet as an activist)?’ It was very difficult having to be the face and the spokesperson for things that I was not able to participate in the process.”
After the frustration she felt in ‘Little Women’, the actress decided to stay away from acting for a while, stop accepting new projects.
“I was held accountable in a way that I started to find really frustrating, because I had no voice, I had nothing to say.
And I started to realize that I just wanted to do things where if someone was going to criticize me, I could respond in a way that didn’t make me hate myself.”
Is it the end of Emma Watson’s film career?
Despite everything that has happened, Emma does not rule out the possibility of returning and participating in a new film, but under certain conditions.
“Yes absolutely. But I’m happy to sit back and wait for the next right thing. I love what I do. It’s about finding a way where I don’t have to divide myself into different faces and people.”
On the other hand, she assures that since she was in Harry Potter, many told her that she could be a great director or producer, so she does not rule out focusing on those areas of the world of cinema.
“People were always telling me that I should direct and produce, even when I was acting in Harry Potter. I was worried that it would just be technical, not creative, and that I wouldn’t be able to bring my skill set to bear.
Being a director seemed unattainable. She didn’t think she had the confidence for that. I know it seems weird because I grew up on a recording set.”
