Although the first time we heard of the devil fruits they seem like a very mystical and strange thing… as we advance a few chapters of ‘One Piece’ we see that almost every neighbor’s son has one. There is still a lot that is not known about these fruits, but what is certain is that when you eat one you get unique abilities in the lottery of powers.
once you eat one Devil Fruityou become a user with powers that can range from something as mundane as creating clothes out of thin air to copying someone else’s appearance or turning your body and everything you touch into ice. The bad news is that users of these fruits are rendered utterly useless if they fall into the water. (bad news if we want to be pirates or go to sea) because you lose the ability to swim.
Still, most of the time you win if you eat a Devil Fruit and those who seek to become more powerful do not think twice to eat one. There are those who kill to get the fruit they want, and others would pay billions for them, because each Devil Fruit is unique and only the first person to take a bite can get its powers until the user dies.
With all the strange and different powers that they can grant, you can differentiate the Devil Fruits in several different types.
Be careful, there are spoilers for ‘One Piece’ if we don’t keep up with the manga!
paramecia
Definitely the most common fruit of ‘One Piece’, and although they are often considered the least powerful, there are also several examples of paramecia really brutal.
These Devil Fruits are very varied and can be summarized in three types of effects: alteration of one’s own body, manipulation of the environment and generation of substances. For example, Buggy’s Bara Bara no Mi allows him to divide his body into different pieces and control them, while Admiral Fujitora’s Zushi Zuzhi no Mi gives him the ability to manipulate gravity.
There are also the Special Paramecias, which are a bit different and allow you to alter both the user’s body and the environment. So far we’ve only seen Charlotte Katakuri’s Mochi Mochi no Mi, which looks like it was originally going to be a Logia but Eiichiro Oda changed his mind at the last moment.
Lodge
Fruit Users Lodge they’re not that common, and thankfully they’re some of the most powerful characters in the series and we don’t need to hold ourselves against each other. These types of Devil Fruits are extremely rare (and coveted) and they allow their user to transform into a specific element and manipulate it to their liking.
This means that they not only become incredibly strong and with overwhelming powers, but also it is very difficult to attack them without Weaponry Haki because it becomes impossible to hit them. In some cases we can find a loophole, like Luffy’s idea of using water to hit Sir Crocodile, but these are rare cases and users of Logia fruits can become practically invincible.
Some examples we’ve seen in the series are Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi that Sabo later inherits, Smoker’s Moku Moku no Mi, or Admiral Kizaru’s Pika Pika no Mi.
zoan
The third main type of Devil Fruit allows its users to turn into a specific type of animal or creature, and also get stronger with matching skills. each fruit zoan He grants three aspects: human form, animal form, and a hybrid form. One of the most curious cases is that of Tony Tony Chopper, who was born as a reindeer and by eating the Hito Hito fruit was able to transform into a more humanoid form.
Also, with a lot of training and the use of his Rumble Ball, he can reach other more extreme forms when he needs to become more powerful.
Thanks to the Zoan fruits, there are people who manage to become a leopard, a bird or a bull. But there are also some highly coveted subtypes of Zoan fruits: the Prehistoric Zoans and the Mythical Zoans.
Prehistoric Zoans are a subclass related to ancient creatures, usually dinosaurs. Some users of this type of Zoan are X Drake with his Ryu Ryu no Mi: Allosaurus Pattern or the Neko Neko no Mi: Who’s-Who Sabretooth Pattern.
Although without a doubt the jewel in the crown are the Mythical Zoan, the rarest and most powerful type of all Devil Fruits and which allow its user to become a mythological creature. These fruits are overwhelming and have created some of the most powerful characters in all of ‘One Piece’, such as Kaido with his Uo Uo fruit: Seiryu Pattern or Marco with his Tori Tori fruit: Phoenix Pattern.
For a long time it was believed that the fruit that Luffy ate as a child was a simple paramecia, but in the last section of the Wano Arc he managed to awaken his Gear Fifth. With this new level of power we find that actually Luffy’s fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan, a Hito Hito fruit: Nika Model which gives him an appearance very similar to that of the Sun God Nika and has further elevated his powers.
Zoan Fruits are really curious and it has been shown that even certain objects can “eat” one to gain consciousness and powers. So throughout ‘One Piece’ we’ve had some examples of objects that have been eaten Devil Fruits and we find cases like a sword that ate a Zou Zou fruit to become an elephant, or a gun that ate the Inu Inu fruit and is now a dog.
Artificial Zoans
This brings us to the last type of Devil Fruit, which is actually a kind of subclass of Zoan. These fruits are artificialcreated by humans, and so far only the Dr. Vegapunk and Caesar Clown have taken care of its production.
The truth is that with the exception of Momonosuke’s Devil Fruit that Vegapunk created, the rest of the artificial fruits that we have seen have turned out quite regular. Those created by Caesar were renamed SMILEand are synthesized from a substance known as SAD in Punk Hazard.
SMILEs allow whoever eats them to become animals, but only one in ten work successfully and grant powers. Failed attempts, in addition to losing the ability to swim and running out of powers, lose the ability to show their emotions and are forced to smile forever. And worst of all, after being bitten for the first time, SMILE fruits retain this secondary effect and affect anyone who takes a bite, wreaking havoc in Wano.
If you are lucky and the SMILE fruit succeeds, transformation is not always ideal and many of its users end up with random body parts turned into animals or attached to an animal. Thus we have been able to see a man whose fist was a gorilla or a man who grows an elephant from his stomach… SMILE fruits are a lottery, and it doesn’t always end well.
