These days, beyond having the new season so close, ‘Vinland Saga’ has returned to hog the spotlight for its director’s criticism of the anime industry. Shuhei Yubata he believes that the creators have to put their batteries to get out of the conventions, and he has not been shy about explaining it.
unbridled threads
It all started with a ‘One-Punch Man’ fan animation that went pretty viral, but ended up leading to the director of ‘Vinland Saga’ was released from his Twitter account to criticize the state of Japanese animation.
“We’ve been doing the same thing for thirty or forty years, and not because it’s the right thing to do, but as a result of misguided craftsmanship and individualism. And I’m afraid I have to add, this isn’t about ‘One-Punch Man,’ it’s about the entire Japanese animation industry,” Yubata wrote.
“It’s about the fact that the industry now is not creative at all, and we need to realize this and work very hard to create an environment where new challenges can be tackled so that we can win over a larger market.”
The rant did not stop there and Yubata also said he was fed up with the number of older people in the industry who only complain and do not want to turn the page, and children who only want to please “because of the need to continue collecting hearts.”

“Creating animation work is not a competition for individual artists, it’s a circus. If you can’t share a vision and aim for high quality, you should be working alone,” said the director.
It is not the first time that Yubata has criticized the state of the Japanese industry, and he also said at the time that there is very little awareness of quality control during anime production, and that it should be the studies that invest more in their own titles.
