The film follows the story of a thoracic surgeon named Zhenya (played by Yulia Peresild), who flies to zero gravity to perform a complicated heart operation on a cosmonaut (played by real-life cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy), who is in no condition to return to Earth for treatment.
In addition to having to make this unprecedented journey, Zhenya has to face discrimination from male astronauts for being a woman.

“El Desafío” was partially filmed aboard the International Space Stationabout 250 kilometers above the earth’s surface, was directed by filmmaker Klim Shipenko and produced by the Yellow, Black and White studio, as well as by the state television channel Channel One Russia, with the help of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. .
According to Konstantin Ernst, CEO of Channel One, the filmmakers’ motivation is to confirm Russia’s leadership in the space sector and to restore the prestige of the cosmonaut profession in the eyes of the new generations.
The actress Peresild had to prove his suitability for the rolewhich involved enduring the unusually harsh conditions of space, through medical, psychological and physical tests.
He cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov was elected commander of the shipwhile Klim Shipenko and Peresild flew as participants in the space flight.
The Principal photography began on October 5, 2021, when Shkaplerov, Peresild and Shipenko flew to the ISS aboard the Soyuz-2.1a launch vehicle.
