In a press conference, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, reported that eight people responsible for the fire that occurred in the immigration station in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico, which left a balance of 39 dead and more, have been identified. of 27 seriously injured.
Among the perpetrators are five members of a private security company, two federal agents and a state immigration agent, who have already made their statement to the authorities.
Velázquez confirmed that the respective arrest warrants are already being prepared and that the responsibilities for each one will be determined according to the hierarchy of their functions.
We disapprove of the staff who did not adhere to the protocols. No one will be protected, there will be no impunity. If there is someone responsible, we are not going to protect anyone; It is not like in other administrations.
For her part, Sara Irene Herrerías, a prosecutor specializing in Human Rights, explained that the arrested immigrants feared they would be deported, which is why they started a protest by accumulating mats and starting a fire. When it spread, none of the authorities took action to open the door or protect them.
That is clear, there was no protocol or regulation that they were respecting (…) they were not able to open a gate. Who didn’t allow these people to leave? Obviously there is a serious crime.
Herrerías reported that the initial crimes of the investigation were homicide and damage to the property of others, but others such as abuse of authority and mistreatment could be included, this will depend on the course and evidence found in the course. Finally, he pointed out that the corresponding necropsies have already been carried out and the protocol for the repatriation of the bodies will begin.
