The biggest movie success of the year has been ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, to the point that it ranks 11th among the highest grossing movies of all time. That forced the its edition in physical format was up to the task and it is finally this Monday, October 31, when it appears for sale in Spain.
Paramount has released ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ on DVD, Blu-ray and UHD. Now we are going to focus on one of the 4K limited editions of the film directed by Joseph Kosinskias two versions have been released in Metallic boxthus demonstrating the importance of its arrival in the domestic market, at the price of €31.99 each of them.
Design
Divisa has given us a joy by launching two different designs of the film in metal box. It’s been a while since that happened in our country -not even with ‘The Batman’ happened-, which shows the incredible pull that this adventure starring Tom Cruise. For my part I have had access to the design on the right.
The front of the steelbook is the image that was used for the movie poster for its IMAX theatrical release and I think it reflects quite well the incredible visual spectacle that the film offers. The rest is identical on both steelbooks with one exception, as the front is here in an ocher hue to match the front, while the other version opts for a blue hue for the same purpose.
Inside, both metal boxes share the image of Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle with a plane behind him. Perhaps a bit simple but it fits fabulously within this edition. Another exterior detail that is worth noting on its exterior is that if you move it so that it reflects the light better, a more brown tone is noticeable on the front where the title of the film appears.
Unfortunately I don’t have the 4K edition of ‘Top Gun’ so that you can see both movies together in their respective metal cases, but a detail that many will surely appreciate is that the title appears aligned and in the same direction on the spine of the steelbook, also including the Paramount logo on top. Come on, it will not clash with the firstsomething that incomprehensibly continues to happen sometimes.
the extras
The 4K edition of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ promises more than 80 minutes of extras, all of them included in 1080p quality. For my part, I am quite clear that all the additional content of the film can be grouped into three different groups that I proceed to detail below:
1) There are four short documentaries about different aspects of the film. In ‘Clearance to take off‘ (9:15) mainly talks about the training that all the actors had to go through, while ‘Breaking New Grounds: The Making of Top Gun: Maverick’ (7:56) highlights the hard work to get the cameras on board the F-18s and thus get the desired shots. For its part, ‘A love letter to aviation’ (4:48) focuses more than anything on Tom Cruise’s passion for flying and how an aerial vehicle he owns is used in the film and the thing closes with ‘Building the Darkstar Plane’ (7:31), where the plane that appears in the first minutes of the function is affected.
2) The star bonus content is ‘Master Class with Tom Cruise – Cannes Film Festival’ (49:04), a chat with the actor before the presentation of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ at the famous French festival. In it, he reviews different aspects of his career, with special emphasis on the importance that his experience in ‘Taps, beyond honor’ had for him, although there is also room for other mythical titles from his filmography such as ‘Magnolia’ or ‘Eyes Wide Shut’. Of course, the most striking thing is the moment in which he answers why he gives himself body and soul to risk scenes and how that has its origin in something from when he was a fairly young child. Essential for lovers of the actor, but from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ don’t expect much here.
3) Two video clips of musical themes that appear in the film. The first is hold my hand (3:52), played by Lady Gaga, and the second is ‘I Ain’t Worried’ (2:37), performed by Onerepublic. They never hurt in an edition in physical format, but it is not something that contributes much in itself, since both are easily accessible online.
Personally I have missed a much longer How To, an audio commentary or a selection of deleted scenes. Those are the additional contents that interest me the most and here they are conspicuous by their absence. However, what is included is worth it, especially the Cruise Master Class.
final notes
The ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ steelbook is a must buy for any movie lover that has not definitively abandoned the physical format. It also comes with two different models so that everyone can choose the one they like best. From the outset, the one that I have been able to assess here came in better for me, but personal tastes come into play here.
Also, audiovisually it is an overwhelming edition -that after putting on the extras I couldn’t resist watching the whole movie again, but I didn’t want to go into it because I don’t have the right equipment to do a proper review- and the only thing I can miss is some additional content , but without this giving me at any time the idea that maybe they are saving something to release a special version later.
Indeed, it’s almost sold out with reservations, because if you still find it and you are interested, get it or prepare to go through the always inflated world of resale if you want to get hold of either of these two metal box editions later.
