The long-awaited return of ‘The Mandalorian’ has finally taken place with ‘The Apostate’, the first episode of the third season of the Disney+ series. One of the great mysteries was knowing how the absence of Cara Dune was going to be explained in this new installment, since Gina Carano She was fired after a series of incendiary comments on social media. Well, we already have the answer to that question.
In the 18th minute of the episode we hear how High Magistrate Karga (Carl Weathers) recognizes Din Djarin (Peter Pascal) who needs a marshal, a position occupied by Cara Dune in the second season, whose absence is explained through a simple line of dialogue:
After stopping Moff Gideon, she was recruited into the Special Forces.
And that’s it, Jon Favreau He did not want to get more complicated and thus explained the disappearance of the character played by Carano. Everything points to the fact that the idea was for Cara Dune to leave ‘The Mandalorian’ but to lead her own series, since at the time a series titled was underway. ‘Rangers of the New Republic’ that was rumored to have the actress. This was never officially confirmed, but it’s hard not to assume it was the case when the series was canceled shortly after Carano’s firing.
A very thoughtful decision
Despite the fact that the character’s absence has been explained in such an unceremonious way, the truth is that those responsible for the series thought a lot about it. For example, Rick Famuyiwadirector of ‘The Apostate’, points out that “it had to be approached creatively, and Jon Favreau took the time to think about it. It was something that was discussed, as we knew it was going to have an impact on the series, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the series are the two characters – Din Djarin and Grogu – so ultimately I felt like something in the service of that, and around the Mandalorians…“. For his part, dave filoni comments the following about the character’s future:
It’s a big galaxy, and we have a lot of characters in it; many characters fight for their screen time. We’ll have to see what the adventures are as the season unfolds, but he’s a great character, someone who was vital in the early days of Din Djarin; We’ll see if he’s evolved beyond that. Now season 3 is mostly about the Mandalorians and the Mandalorian saga, the story of the Mandalorians. There are different characters that he’s met since Bo-Katan that take on a lot more of the spotlight, which makes sense where his arc is heading, the story of him and Grogu specifically.
It seems clear that there will be no trace of Cara Dune in this season 3, but also that the door has been left open to a possible return in the future. A separate issue is that at Disney they are going to accept such a possibility, but at Lucasfilm they already made it clear that they were not going to sign another actress to replace Carano.
