British series have practically become a genre in themselves, at least in terms of the multitude of followers they have. The fact that many are miniseries makes them even more appealing, as the case that does not occupy: ‘The Fire’ (‘Deadwater Fell’) It’s a drama with only 4 chapters and what you can see on Disney +.
THE 10 BEST SERIES OF THE DECADE (2010-2019)
Small town, big hell
The argument places us in Kirkdarroch, a small Scottish town where everything is seemingly perfect until tragedy strikes him. The Kendricks family house burns down, ending the life of Tom’s wife and daughters, the only survivor of the fateful event. Upon recognizing a strange substance in the bodies of the victims, the police will begin an investigation in which even the best-kept secrets will come to light.
‘The Fire’ is a production created and scripted by daisy coulam (‘Grantchester’) and directed by lynsey miller (‘Anne Boleyn’). It was originally broadcast in 2020 on Channel 4 and in Spain it premiered discreetly on Filmin.
This fiction could be integrated into the not so recent trend in the British series about “small towns affected by a violent event”. ‘Broadchurch’, ‘Happy Valley’, the aforementioned ‘Grantchester’ and ‘The Fire’ are good examples of them.
The main interest of the series is the portrait he makes of the town’s characters. Already in the first chapter they show us two families with an idyllic life: health, good economic situation, harmony between the different members… until the fire arrives.
Secrets and Lies
The story uses this event as a catalyst for the real central theme: all the secrets and deceptions that hide behind a facade of apparent normality and how even the most impeccable smile hides a few dead in the closet (and not always metaphorically).
As the mystery progresses, we are closer to knowing what really happened the night of the fire but, in the end, it ends up being more important to us to discover the true face of the protagonists and how it will affect your life if certain truths come to light.
Within the cast of actors stands out David Tennant (‘Broadchurch’, ‘Jessica Jones’), in the role of Tom Kendricks. The actor does an excellent job (as usual) and very contained, with possibly the most inscrutable character of all. Cush Jumbo (‘The Good Wife’) is the other great protagonist of the cast, which completes Matthew McNulty, Anna Madeley Y Maureen Beatty.
Although not fast-paced, all the episodes know maintain interest without overusing dramatic twists constantly. Perhaps it lacks a few more brushstrokes to stand out among similar proposals and shine with its own light, however, as an intriguing series it is more than correct.
‘The Fire’ is an interesting British series that uses the mystery plot to show the hidden face of the inhabitants of a small town. A solvent proposal that solves everything in just 4 chapters of 45 minutes. Perfect for marathoning in an afternoon.
