On May 21, the relatives of the searcher mother Yesenia Guadalupe Durazo Cota reported her disappearance after she was abducted outside her home in Arivenchi, Sonora, Mexico. A few days ago it was reported that fortunately she was already located safe and sound and, according to the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office, she “arrived on her own foot at her home.”
According to the information that Cecy Flores, the leader of the Sonora Searching Mothers collective, told the media, after having activated the Amber alert, the Prosecutor’s Office set up a search operation due to pressure from the collective. However, Yesenia returned home because the criminal group that took her returned her to her house.
According to Cecy’s account, Yesenia was severely hurt and has not wanted to talk about what happened for fear of reprisals against her or her family. Also, the situation she went through was not easy at all.
Only that is what we can say at the moment. I create the fear of reprisals, because she can go to another place, but her family stays here, because they live here. I think her situation was very delicate, very strong things happened and she cannot and does not want to say everything she has experienced.
On May 21, the victim was talking on the phone outside her home when armed men aboard a van arrived and forcibly took her away. Her whereabouts were unknown until yesterday.
Let us remember that since 2020, Yesenia has joined the group of Seeking Mothers due to the disappearance of her husband, caused by criminal groups.
Once she was deprived of her freedom, the leader of the group called for help to the authorities and asked the criminals for mercy, stressing that they are only looking for their missing relatives, not guilty ones. In this way, they assured that they do not intend to harm criminal groups, since they recognize that “they have control of different parts of Mexico.”
So far it is unknown if the State Prosecutor’s Office will continue the investigations, but, finally, the most important thing is that Yesenia is alive and at home.
