One of the maneuvers of Alec Baldwin’s legal team during the judicial process that he is facing for his criminal responsibility in the accidental death of Halyna Hutchins, director of photography for the film Rust, was to discredit Santa Fe County Special Prosecutor Andrea Reeb, who charged the actor with the crime of involuntary manslaughter.
Baldwin’s lawyers noted that the recent appointment of Andrea Reeb as a representative of the New Mexico State House of Representatives could affect her impartiality In his work as a prosecutor, he was even accused of taking the artist to court as a media and political strategy.
Although Reeb has always denied all the allegations, this week he announced his resignation as prosecutor.
This news was released through a statement by the office of the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, which also details that the resignation is voluntary and corresponds to “practical necessity”: to prevent the debate from focusing on his skills as a prosecutor, as the lawyers of Baldwinand revolve around the facts and the justice that both the victim and his family deserve.
Charged with involuntary manslaughter
The actor Alec Baldwin, 64, was indicted, along with gunsmith Hanna Gutierrez-Reed, with manslaughter, for the incident that occurred on October 21, 2021 on the set of the film Rustwhere the cinematographer died Halyna Hutchins.
The indictment was unsealed Tuesday, January 31, by the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office.; Hutchins died hours after Baldwin shot him with a prop gun that was loaded with live ammunition, though he has testified that he did not pull the trigger. The film’s director, Joel Souzawas also injured.
Both Alec’s and Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys maintain that their respective clients are innocent; the district attorney Mary Carmack Altwies said to CNN: “Today we have taken another important step to ensure justice for Halyna Hutchins. In New Mexico, no one is above the law and justice will be served.” If found guilty, the actor and gunsmith could spend up to 18 months in prison and must pay a $5,000 fine.
