Lucerys Velaryon is sent to Storm’s End for Lord Borros to support Rhaenyra Targaryen in defending her right to the Iron Throne, but this mission ends in tragedy.
Lucerys and Aaemon again come into conflict, which temporarily stops Lord Borros who allows Lucerys to leave aboard his dragon, but Aemond would not be left empty-handed and allowed his dragon Vaghar to eat his half-brother.
Rhaenyra, who lost the baby she was carrying, knows that hopes for peace with Alicent Hightower’s side.
In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Ryan Condal explained the symbology of these deaths, and what they represent for the future of the Game of Thrones prequel.
“There is a lot of beautiful symmetry in this season. He also started with a dragon ride and ended with a dragon ride. There is a lot of symbolism to be drawn from it. But yeah, I think we figured out in the domino of the events that happened in the final episode, one aspect was linking the horrible birth that goes horribly wrong in the pilot with another horrible birth that goes wrong in the finale.”.
The meaning of the Dragons
Condal also pointed out the coincidence that the series began with the death of a queen giving birth and its first season culminated with the death of Lucerys.
“It is mother and daughter. She is the daughter of the woman who died in the pilot who is now having this very difficult birth. That was always her fear, birth is a battlefield and now Rhaenyra is at war and this is her own battle”.
Based on the book “Fire and Blood” by George RR Martin, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of the Targaryen house.
The main cast is made up of Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans.
The first episodes of House of the Dragon are available on the digital platform HBO Max.
