Something that few know is that in 2010, the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro began work on an adaptation of the film for Disney Pictures that promised to be much darker than Eddie Murphy.
The Mexican revealed that he had plans to take the story to an augmented reality setting and not in the real world like the original 2003 film. He even considered Hatbox like the main character.

The direction would be under the hands of Justin Simien. Del Toro continued as a consultant on the script and as an executive producer.
