The filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos returns with ‘Poor Creatures’, a story that seems to reformulate Frankenstein based on the 1992 novel by Alistair Gray. Emma Stone stars in the film alongside Willem Dafoe, and has a new full official trailer. It will be released in US theaters on September 8, 2023 with a date to be confirmed in Spain.
‘Poor creatures’ tells the incredible story and the fantastic evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman revived by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the mundanity she lacks, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a sophisticated and wicked lawyer, in a dizzying adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her time, Bella becomes firm in her purpose to defend equality and liberation.
Based on the book by Alasdair Gray, the script is the work of Tony McNamara, being the second collaboration between Lanthimos and McNamara after ‘The Favourite’. Producers are Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone. Poor Creatures also stars Ramy Yousef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Mark Ruffalo.
Although it comes from a Disney subsidiary, it seems that Lanthimos has had no problem making the film as graphic as he wanted, since ‘Poor Babies’ has been rated an “R” for its “Strong and pervasive sexual content, graphic nudity , disturbing material, blood and language”.
