The arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the renamed DC Studios last October, in addition to a huge coup de effect of the Distinguished Competition in its eternal confrontation with the hegemonic MCU, managed to excite a large part of a baffled fandom after the collapse of the SnyderVerse; something that was increased when the duo presented their definitive strategy to dethrone Marvel.
At the end of January, the dynamic duo put on the table the plan for the renewed DC film division, which will start with a first chapter entitled ‘Gods and Monsters’ made up of a good number of films and series, including ‘Superman: Legacy’, a feature film focused on the Man of Steel written by Gunn himself.

Well, now we have learned that the scriptwriter will double as a director in a production that has its premiere scheduled for July 11, 2025 and that, for the moment, it still does not have an actor associated with the titular role after the departure of Henry Cavill from the DCEU. So he has commented on a twitter thread the decision to take the reins of a very personal project for him.
“Yeah, I’m going to direct ‘Superman: Legacy’ to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me that when he saw the release date he started crying. I asked him why. He said, ‘Man, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I didn’t realize it. I lost my dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me when I was a kid, but he supported my love of comics and movies and I wouldn’t be making this movie if it weren’t for him.”
In addition, the filmmaker has revealed that his dalliance with Superman dates back yearswhen he was first offered to work with the character.
“I’ve come a long way to this point. I was offered Superman years ago, and initially said no because I didn’t have a unique, fun, emotional way that would give Superman the dignity he deserves. Then a little less than a year ago I saw the way to do it, focusing on Superman’s legacy, how both his Kryptonian aristocratic parents and his Kansas farmer parents shape who he is and the choices he makes.”
To finish, Gunn has explained that writing a script is not synonymous with wanting to direct itbut that ‘Superman: Legacy’ has enough charm to dedicate the next two years of his life to the project.
“So I finally decided to write the script, but was on the fence about directing despite constant pestering from Peter Safran and others to get me involved (sorry Peter). Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it visually and emotionally enough. I don’t want to spend over two years directing it, especially something of this magnitude but, bottom line, I love this script and I’m tremendously excited as we begin this journey.”
There is still a long way to go before we can enjoy the new adventure of the last son of Krypton, but he hype it’s already very real.
