These days there is a lot of talk about ‘Blade Runner 2099’, the series that Amazon Prime Video has finally given the green light to. Not a few are referring to her as the first live action series located in that universe, something that to some extent we could say that it is false. There is already a series in real image of ‘Blade Runner’, but the most curious of all is that its title is misleading: ‘Total Challenge 2070’.
What is ‘Total Challenge 2070’ like?
Created by Art Monterastelli and released in 1999, ‘Desafío Total 2070’ takes its name from the film directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1990 based on a story by Philip K Dick, but the truth is that he was much more inspired by ‘Blade Runner’, also inspired by another work by the same writer. Monterastelli himself admitted this fact years later, arguing that it gave screenwriters more creative opportunities and made more intelligent use of the limited budget at their disposal.
A good example of this inspiration is already found in the first episode, where some replicants use memory implants to try to be more human. In addition, the influence of the film Ridley Scott it is also perceived in its visual finish, where it tries to replicate the same aesthetic but with frankly improvable results.
‘Total Challenge 2070’ takes us to a future in which a small group of companies has great power of influence over the government. There we follow the story of David Hume (Michael Easton), a police officer from an agency responsible for ensuring public safety who has just seen how his partner was killed by some androids. To complicate things further, he is forced to accept a new partner, who is secretly an android quite advanced both technologically and psychologically.
Unfortunately, success did not accompany ‘Total Challenge 2070’, which led to its cancellation after the premiere of a single season Composed of 22 episodes. If you search on YouTube, you will find practically all the chapters in case you are curious to see it.
