March is here, the month of the Oscars, of women, of the weather beginning to gradually improve and, of course, of juiciest movie premieres. This first weekend our theaters receive nominees for the Hollywood Academy Awards, festival winners, a double helping of anime and the new installment of the quintessential boxing spin-off.
‘Creed III’ (2023)
- It is the third part of the spin-off of the ‘Rocky’ saga that debuted in 2015 by Ryan Coogler.
- After Coogler and Steven Caple Jr, Michael B. Jordan has been in charge of occupying the director’s seat, doing a double in front of and behind the cameras.
- On this occasion, B. Jordan will face none other than Jonathan Majors, who gives life to another luxury antagonist after his MCU debut as Kang the Conqueror.
- It is the first ‘Creed’ without the presence of Rocky Balboa, but I can inform you that he is not missed at all.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘Creed III’: Michael B. Jordan infuses sugar and passion for anime into a remarkable show that shows that the saga does not need Rocky to survive
‘The son’ (‘The Son’, 2022)
- It is the new film by Florian Zeller, playwright who won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay with his film debut ‘The Father’.
- It stars Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Hopkins and Laura Dern; names that justify viewing by themselves.
- The soundtrack is composed by Hans Zimmer, has nine cuts and is only 20 minutes long.
- It is based on Zeller’s own play of the same name.
‘Saint Omer. The people against Laurence Coly’ (‘Saint Omer’, 2022)
- ‘Saint Omer’ comes to our cinemas after winning the Grand Jury Prize and the prize for best first film at the Venice Festival, as well as the prize for best film at the Seville Festival.
- It is directed by Alice Diop, who is making her fiction debut after turning to the documentary field.
- This judicial drama was France’s candidate to compete for the Oscar for best international film.
- Its cast is made up of, among others, Kayije Kagame, Guslagie Malanda, Valérie Dréville and Aurélia Petit.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘Saint Omer’, the winner of the Seville Festival 2022, is a harsh judicial film that hides pearls for those who dare to dig into it
‘To Leslie’ (2023)
- It is directed by Michael Morris, who makes the leap to the big screen after his work in series like ‘For all humanity’, ‘Preacher’, ‘Animal Kingdom’ or ‘Better Call Saul’.
- Its protagonist Andrea Riseborough has managed to scratch an Oscar nomination for best actress without an express campaign for it.
- Riseborough’s interpretation has already captivated festivals such as Gijón and prizes such as the Spirit Awards.
- The cast of this drama based on real events is completed by Marc Maron, Stephen Root and Allison Janney, among others.
In Espinof: ‘To Leslie’ has changed Hollywood forever: how an unknown film has gotten Andrea Riseborough an Oscar nomination without spending a dollar more
