Maybe the card-collecting rage of ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!‘ we missed a bit, but these days the fan community has revived when an extremely rare card designed by Kazuki Takahashi himself has been put up for sale.
The letter in particular is “Tyler the Great Warrior’, the rarest in the history of ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’. It was created in 2005, and Takahashi was heavily involved in its conception. With this, the letter could attract the attention of collectors and anime fans, but the reason why it has reached this price is because it is one of a kind: only a single copy was released and it has a complex history behind it.
Time to turn the page (and to get some bitches off)
At the time, this letter was created for the Make-A-Wish Foundation to grant a wish to Tyler Gresslea teenager who had liver cancer and asked a personalized card from ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ based on ‘Dragon Ball’. So the young man was able to meet Takahashi, who made several versions based on Trunks from the Future, Tyler’s favorite character.
Apparently, Takahashi gave Gressle a choice of several designs, even incorporating some of his own sketches. He even got to see the creation process, including sealing and how it was packed into a protective sleeve for him.
Gressle’s health improved, and the fan of ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!‘ he kept the letter for 18 years, never considering getting rid of it. After all this time he has changed his mind about selling it, since he is aware that there are many collectors with an eye on the letter and over the years it has been receiving all kinds of offers.
“I’ve valued it for a very long time, and I think it would be nice if others could too…or someone who’s really going to appreciate this card and the story and all that it took to create,” explained Gressle, who now wants to start a family. and run his own business, so the auction money will come in handy.
The auction on Ebay reached 180 bids and at the end it has ended up selling for 311,211 dollarss… that although it does not give to retire it does brighten the pocket. “Tyler the Great Warrior” is the most expensive card in ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ but it still falls short of the 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps letter that sold for $12.6 million last year.
