rick astleythe British singer who 35 years ago scored a number 1 hit with the song “Never gonna give you up”has filed a lawsuit against the rappers Yung Gravy Y Nick Seeleyfor imitating his voice in snippets of the 2022 single “Betty (Get Money)”.
The place TMZ revealed that Astley allegedly argues that Gravy (real name is Matthew Raymond Hauri) along with its producers “conspired to include a deliberate and nearly indistinguishable imitation of Astley’s voice throughout the song.” The voice heard in “Betty (Get Money)” is from Seeley, who is also one of the producers of the track.
Notably Gravy duly licensed the instrumental track to “Never Gonna Give You Up”, but Astley did not consent to his voice being imitated. In past statements the rappers indicated that, in effect, who is heard on his single is not the British singer: “Along with my friend Nick, who does a lot of repetitions of samples and recreates original samples, we basically redid the whole song. I had a different singer and instruments, but it was all very close because it makes it easier legally.”
