‘Shutter Island’ is one of the most critically acclaimed thrillers. We tell you where to see it and some curiosities about it.

I speak of Shutter Island (The sinister island), a film that shows us the darkest and most twisted side of Scorsese’s filmography, and that you can already see in the Netflix catalogue.
The film is an homage to gothic settings, B-movies and pulp stories. DiCaprio brings to life Edward “Teddy” Danielswho is sent to a psychiatric hospital on Shutter Island, in Boston Harbor, along with his new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo).
Both are on a mission to investigate the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane after one of the patients goes missing. In their investigation they encounter suspicious doctors, disturbing patients, a hellish conspiracy, and a totally unexpected ending. 1- Shutter Island It is an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Dennis Lehane of 2003, which marked the fourth collaboration between the director and his protagonist in their long history together.
2- Mark Ruffalo won the role of Chuck Aule after send Martin Scorsese a letter in which he made it clear to him how much he wanted to work with him: “I have been a great admirer of his for almost 20 years in the profession and it has always been my dream,” he declared shortly after the film’s premiere. “So I wrote him a letter telling him how much I wanted to work with him, and it worked.”

3- Before Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio embarked on the filming of this film, they intended to film The wolf of Wall Street. However, funding for that film fell apart, allowing them to focus on Shutter Island.
4- Initially, the film was going to be directed by wolfgang petersen, but after making considerable changes to Lehane’s story to make it an action blockbuster, the project fell apart. It was also thought of David Fincher (se7en, zodiac) to direct the film, but it was ultimately left to Scorsese.
5- The pen that DiCaprio uses in the film is a Parker Jotter, released in 1954 (the year the film takes place). It was the first successful ballpoint pen to hit the market, making fountain pens obsolete.

6- Of all the movies Scorsese and DiCaprio have made together, Shutter Island is the only one it did not get any Oscar nominations.
7- Scorsese wanted to make a truly disturbing film, and he knew that music had to play an essential factor for it. Movie buffs and Stephen King will realize that the music from the opening sequence of Shutter Island is a reference to The glow of stanley kubrick, one of the best horror movies ever. The song, composed by composer György Ligeti, was used in The glow during the most tense scenes of the film.

Much influence from classic horror movies
8- Scorsese searched through libraries of film material to find the visual style and aesthetics he wanted for Shutter Island. In the end he found a collection of zombie movies from Val Lewtonfrom 1940. Scorsese decided to gather the film crew of Shutter Island so they could see Out of the Past and Vertigo in order for them to understand his vision.
9- In an interview with The Telegraph Before the film’s release in February 2010, Martin Scorsese referred to the mystery film Laurafrom 1944, as one of his greatest influences to shoot Shutter Island. Laura is about a detective who becomes so obsessed with a murder investigation that he begins to fall in love with the dead woman at the center of the crime.
10- They were also influenced by classic RKI Pictures films such as cat people, Isle of the Dead, The Seventh Victim and I Walked with a Zombie. This makes sense when we consider the nightmare sequences of Shutter Island.
