Just over 100 kilometers from Madrid we find Avila, one of the 15 cities of our geography that have been declared a World Heritage Site, which is a true wonder. Come to a place that lives up to its title. For this reason, we want to propose some of the most special corners of the city that will make us get to know it more thoroughly, in addition to taking advantage of eating in one of its restaurants and staying the night in one of its Palaces.
The wall of Avila
What less than to start with the symbol of the city, its wall that is World Heritage Monument which constitutes one of the best representations of defensive architecture fully preserved in the world with more than 2000 years of existence.
Cathedral
Of course, on our visit we cannot miss the Cathedral, considered the first Gothic cathedral in Spain that is projected as a temple and fortress. A place of worship of great beauty and full of history that stands on the remains of a primitive building dedicated to El Salvador.
Basilica of Saint Vincent
Yes, without a doubt our visit will be very cultural and full of monuments, especially of a religious nature. Thus, this Basilica is one of those that we cannot miss outside the walls and dedicated to San Vicente, being a great model of the Romanesque.
The Humilladero-Viewpoint of Los Cuatro Postes
Taking advantage of the fact that we are outside the wall, we have to go to the Humilladero, which is a small hermitage on the outskirts of the town, popularly known as The Four Posts. Actually, it serves more as a viewpoint, where we can enjoy a great panoramic view of the city, and it is made up of four monolithic Doric columns joined by an architrave.
Small Market Square
In this square we find the Town Hall, so it is the nerve center of the city where we can sit and enjoy a good aperitif or visit the St. Peter’s Church which is on the other side.
Royal Monastery of Santo Tomas
On our list could also perfectly be the Convent of Santa Teresa, the Monastery of the Incarnation or this one, the one from St Thomas which is one of the highlights outside the walls and where it is said that the eldest son of the Catholic Monarchs is buried.
We may have compiled only seven corners here, but without a doubt, there is much more that we can discover in Ávila between places of worship, palaces, mansions and much more. A city full of charm that we should visit.
