Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro shone at the UK Academy of Arts Awards (BAFTA) with his film ‘Pinocchio’. At the event, he managed to win the award for ‘Best Animated Film’ and the applause of the attendees, including the princes of Wales, William and Kate Middleton.
Guillermo and his co-directors were nominated for three categories, but they only won one, that of ‘Best Animated Feature’. By being named ‘Pinocchio’ as the winner, the Mexican thanked the musical that was released on November 24 on the Netflix streaming platform for this new recognition.
“I want to especially thank Netflix for thinking, a few years ago, that the Pinocchio musical, about life and death where everyone dies at the end during the rise of Mussolini, was a good idea”were the first words of his speech.
One of the most critical moments was when the heir to the throne of Great Britain and his wife were attentive to the words of Guillermo del Toro and applauded him loudly when he assured that animation should not only be a genre for children.
“I want to thank the British Academy for not only this honour, but for allowing our animated film to enter categories they are not normally allowed in. I think animation is not a genre for children, it’s a medium for art, it’s a medium for film and that I think is something that should definitely stay in the conversation.”

With an ovation they approved ‘Pinocchio’, a film that has stolen many opinions and that it is on its way to the Oscars 2023 also nominated for ‘Best Animated Film’.
Netizens reacted to the award with comments like: “I can smell that Oscar”; “Many congratulations to all! One of the best and most mature animations I’ve ever seen. Really very moving, brilliantly voice acting and just beautiful”; “Well deserved by everyone on the team, an extraordinary film. I fell in love with Pinocchio all over again.”; “Congratulations, Pinocchio! I saw your movie tonight. Coming from a puppeteer, it’s a unique movie. I rate it 7 or 8/10.”
‘Pinocchio’ stood out in a category in which they were also nominated ‘Turning Red’ with Domee Shi and Lindsey Collins, the ‘Puss In Boots: The Last Wish’ by Joel Crawford and Mark Swift; bets from Disney and Dreamworks.
