This is the update 23.6 of the DLE that has been presented this Tuesday by the director of the RAE and president of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (ASALE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, and the director of the 24th edition of the Dictionary, the academic Paz Battaner.
They have been included in the dictionary “supervened” (imposed or artificial); “hagioscope” (small opening made in the wall of a church to see the altar) or “translaticio” (belonging or relative to the translation).

New uses of words in gastronomy, leisure, sexuality and gender, many words from specialties in science, industry and technology, medicine, physics or chemistry, environment, economy and law or sports are the topics that contribute the most news to the new update of the dictionary. .

In the social field there is the addition of the word “ageism” (discrimination based on age, especially of the elderly or elderly). And another of the additions is “ruralize” or the new meaning for the term “gap”, referring to the distance between situations or things or groups of people, especially due to the lack of union or cohesion.
Micromachismo: A form of machismo that manifests itself in small acts, gestures or expressions that are usually unconscious.
The new incorporations in the technological field are, among others, “big data”, “dotcom”, “gamer”, or the expressions “electronic commerce”, “data mining”, “planned obsolescence” or “useful life”.
From the gastronomic world, the words “panettone” either “panettone”; new meanings of “sancocho”, in reference to the Canarian stew, and “compango”.
Words such as “dingo”, “manta ray” and “warthroat” are incorporated from the natural sciences, while from medicine “cortisol”, “hyperimmune”, “lidocaine” or “monodose” come to the dictionary. And from literaturegarciamarquiano” or “cortazariano”.

Battaner has also explained how four new meanings have been added to the noun “cut” derived from the verb to cut: each of the musical compositions on a record; interruption in a radio or television broadcast for publicity; phase in a selection process; and piece of ice cream.
“Conspiranoia”, a tendency to interpret certain events as if it were a conspiracy, and its derivative “conspiranoic” are other novelties, as well as some meanings of words that are only used in the media such as “mercury” as temperature or the word “theme” that is now used as a modern musical composition.
Of the billion queries per year that are made to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language, there are trends such as the one that has occurred with The word “haiga”, which, like the vulgar formula for the verb to do, has been consulted more than 7,000 times in a monthDue, Battaner has indicated, to “urban legends” that there are incorrect words in the dictionary, when this term only appears as a definition of an ostentatious vehicle from the 50s.

There are a total of 3,152 novelties, not only additions to terms but also amendments to already existing articles and deletions, now available on the dictionary website, which has the support of La Caixa.
It is, Muñoz Machado recalled, the most emblematic and important work of the RAE, although not the only one because in addition to the annual update, work is being done simultaneously on the 24th edition that will completely renew the current one and that is expected to be presented at 2026.
