    Know the most common surname in Mexico

    According to statistical data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEG), in Mexico there is a wide variety of registered surnames. To be more precise, it is about 34 thousand. These data, released in 2020, provide precise information on the 10 most common. And if you did not know, here we will tell you what the last name most popular in the whole country and its origin.

    According to the INEGI birth census for the year 2020, the last name most common in our country is Hernández. This has a total of 671 thousand 972 records nationwide, followed by García, Martínez, López, González, Pérez, Rodríguez, Sánchez, Ramírez and Cruz.

    The derivation is wide because it is a last name patronymic. This means that it is formed by adding a prefix or suffix to the father’s name, as happens, for example, in countries like Finland or Spain. To be more specific, for its formation the ending ez is added to the name of the father, in this case it would be Hernández (son of Hernán). Other examples are Martínez (son of Martín) or Rodríguez (son of Rodrigo). Patronymic surnames were also used in countries such as Germany, England, Sweden, Scotland, Ireland, Romania, and Italy.
