You may be wondering if Barbie hates music, but no, just a song that seemed to drive her crazy. It’s about the hit ‘Barbie Girl’ from the Aqua group, and this is the story of the drama that went to court.
Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ Story
It was in the year 1997 when the pop group, Aqua, released one of their biggest hits, the song ‘Barbie Girl’.
It quickly became one of the most listened to songs and one of the most popular at summer parties due to its catchy sound.
However, not everyone was happy with the song, Barbie and Mattel were very upset with the lyrics of the song, as they claimed that it was very far from their values and lifestyle.
“I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world, plastic life, it’s fantastic. You can brush my hair, undress anywhere, imagination, life is your creation… You can touch, you can play, if you say: ‘I will always be yours’”, says a fragment of the famous song.
Barbie sued Barbie Girl
Although the group claimed that their song had nothing to do with the famous doll, Matel decided to sue MCA Records in 2000, for having sexualized the doll.
A few years later, Barbie won the rights to the song, and Mattel used it for a commercial in 2009, albeit changing those verses that had bothered the doll so much from the original song.
The point is that Barbie hated the song so much, that she decided that it would not be included in her live-action movie, despite already having the rights.
