HBO just surprised us all by announcing the cancellation of ‘Westworld’ after 4 seasons. Its creators had hopes of having one more to give the closure they wanted to the story, but it will not be possible and the science fiction series is left without an end.
Everything suggests that the cancellation is part of Warner’s restructuring work to reduce costs and focus on those projects that do have the expected success. Because it is true that ‘Westworld’ became HBO’s flagship series during its first two seasons, but then its popularity dropped a lot, to the point that his fourth installment went relatively unnoticedespecially if we compare it with the reception that ‘The house of the dragon’ has had.
From HBO they have released the following statement on making the cancellation of ‘Westworld’ public: “For the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-blowing odyssey, raising the bar at every turn. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It has been a pleasure accompanying you on this journey.“
For its part, Kilter Films, the producer of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joyhas highlighted that “making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We have been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the short space of time left before our AI overlords forbid us.“.
Now we will have to see how the fans of the series react, Well, HBO does not usually leave the series halfway and at the time they were already able to make a ‘Deadwood’ movie to close everything that premiered 13 years after its third season. It doesn’t seem likely that the same will happen here, mind you.
